2009 SUMMER WORKSHOP
We are really excited about our training this summer! We have spent many hours planning what we feel is the best format for our summer workshop. We tried to incorporate your suggestions from the surveys that were returned after the last training. These classes are different from any of our previous summer workshops or the fall conference classes but we feel they will be very beneficial to you. When you register you will choose between training for panel judges and training for safety judges. Please read the description for each when making your selection. We need to know how many we will have in each session for room set up and also preparing your folder with the appropriate materials for your day of training. All classes will have a team of trainers throughout the day but they will have at least one trainer that remains with the group all day. We hope to avoid duplication of information this way and make the most of our time with the demo teams. You must be present in class for the whole day to get credit on the roster. You will get a “test” in your folder to fill out during the day as the information is covered. Your trainer will collect your test/evaluation form at the end of the day.
All training is free to MCJA members but everyone will be asked to pay a $20.00 fee for the food and refreshments for the day. We will be having a round table discussion session during lunch and you will have an opportunity to submit topics you would like covered. There will not be scheduled breaks during the day as each class will take them when they are at a good “stopping” spot. You may register and pay on-line or print out the form and mail it in. Please bring your manual and any “judging sheets” you may use. If you would like us to add your sheets to the website please mail them to us at mcjacheer@gmail.com. We are trying to collect as many as we can for others to try out. We hope to see many of you there! Questions?? ContactkKarla Koviak.
SUMMER WORKSHOP CLASSES
BEGINNER/NOVICE PANEL CLASS
Our suggestion is if you have never judged before or have judged less than 4 years you take the novice class. It will go over everything in great detail and at a slower pace. You will have a team of trainers and have the opportunity to practice judging with video and also live teams. Your session will last all day with breaks for snacks and lunch. This class will cover basic judging mechanics and skills and also the categories and score sheets for each of the MHSAA rounds.
EXPERIENCED PANEL CLASS
An advanced session for those experienced officials who believe they have seen everything! Interactive, in-depth, informative and targeted for veteran officials. Reinforcing the things you do well, providing strategies for things that are challenges for you; advancing your skills from being a good official to a GREAT ONE! This class will focus on any changes for the upcoming season and any common questions or issues from last season. The morning will be spent covering all 3 MHSAA rounds and you will practice judging using a live demo team. The afternoon will be a judging “lab” where you will split into groups of three to practice scoring different elements and discussing scores as a “panel”, then compare with the whole group. There will be one veteran judge in each group of three as well as a few trainers to facilitate the group. In the lab situation we will be using a video projection screen so we can view the same team several times looking for different elements or skills and after discussion view it again for things we may have missed the first time through. With the tapes we know the performance is exactly the same each time and we can replay it as often as we need to fine tune our observation skills.
SAFETY
Safety judges will start out in the same classroom but will be splitting into novice and experienced groups at different times throughout the day. We will be using the live demo teams to demonstrate a variety of skills and stunts to help train you what to look for in each of the three MHSAA rounds. We will also focus on some of the most common penalty problems and where the best positions to view them might be. There will be discussion time to address any concerns or issues from last season as well as the new safety information. We will also cover safety mechanics.
