Winter sports coaches must complete the official’s ratings by April 1, 2019. The MHSAA provides the coach with guidelines regarding the rating of game officials that can be found at the link below.

This year the Competitive Cheer Coaches Association provided education on how to complete the ratings utilizing the MHSAA guidelines. Why is this important? With this education, the ratings may be a bit lower than in the past. The coach’s education as well as the MHSAA guidelines state that an official should start out a contest with a 2 rating. The work during the contest should either move that rating up or down. If no issues of any kind occurred the official should stay at a 2. A rating of 1 or excellent official would be reserved for the official who is first class and surpasses all others.
Never officiate worried about how a score or penalty will impact your ratings. As a coach, you would tell the team to put forth the best performance and the scores will follow. The same is true with officiating. Judge the contest based on what you see with poise and integrity, and your ratings will reflect your performance.
